As we approach the end of another eventful year, we want to express our gratitude for your continued support and partnership. It has been an incredible journey, and we are thrilled to share some of the highlights and achievements that shaped our success in 2024.
- Expanded Connectivity:
This year, we landed the 2Africa cable in Qua Iboe, Akwa Ibom State—Nigeria’s first submarine cable system outside Lagos. This milestone will strengthen broadband connectivity in the South-South and South-East regions of Nigeria, bridging gaps in underserved areas. Our metro fiber network will serve key locations in Port Harcourt, Bonny Town, and Onne, with work in progress to cover other major cities including, Uyo, Eket, Oron, and more across the South-South region.
We also expanded capacity to Burkina Faso, Niger, and other landlocked West African countries, upgraded Equinix’s Lagos and Abidjan Data Centers (LG1, LG2, and AB1), and made significant progress on the construction of Equinix’s interconnection hub (LG3), set to launch in Saka Tinubu, Victoria Island, Lagos, Nigeria mid-2025.
- Strengthened Regional Interconnectivity
West Africa’s digital ecosystem experienced remarkable growth in regional connectivity this year. The challenges posed by the submarine cable cut earlier in the year, presented an opportunity to leverage recent subsea cables with the addition of capacity investment, interconnection infrastructure, new Points of Presence, and growth in internet exchange capacity to ensure seamless and resilient traffic flow across the region.
Our AMS-IX Lagos Exchange witnessed substantial growth in regional internet traffic of over 200%, increasing from 30Gbps at its launch last year to over 100Gbps this year. By facilitating diverse interconnections between global and regional peers, the exchange has accelerated regional interconnectivity and driven substantial traffic growth, enabling ISPs, telecom carriers, and content providers to interconnect at a centralized platform.
Our parent company, Equinix, continues to expand its global footprint with the construction of new state-of-the-art data centers in key strategic locations this year, including Johannesburg, Istanbul, and Barcelona. This is to support the growing demand for scalable, secure, and sustainable data solutions across these regions.
- Expanded Product Portfolio – Managed Private Cloud by VMWare
This year, we expanded our portfolio with the addition of Managed Private Cloud (MPC) by VMware. This capability empowers Nigerian businesses with access to scalable, enterprise-grade cloud solutions tailored to local needs. Designed for businesses navigating a digital-first world, compliance demands, and economic realities, MPC combines the reliability of VMware with the flexibility and performance required to drive growth, ensuring secure and efficient infrastructure for your critical operations.
- Thought Leadership and Partnerships
MainOne actively participated in key industry events, including AfricaTech Festival in Cape Town South Africa, ITW USA, ITW Africa in Nairobi Kenya, NOG Energy Week in Abuja, Nigerian Peering and Interconnection Forum (NGPIF), African Digital Week in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, Local Content Conference in Takoradi, Ghana, Nigerian Fintech Week, Moonshot by Tech Cabal etc, sharing insights and expertise on the region’s digital transformation. We engaged in fruitful discussions with customers and partners, exploring innovative solutions to accelerate business growth. Our commitment to thought leadership remains unwavering as we continue to shape the digital landscape in West Africa.
- Integration into Equinix
With our integration into the Equinix global platform now complete, and the appointment of Wole Abu as the new Managing Director for Equinix West Africa, we are poised to deliver even more enhanced service offerings in the coming year.
